Did You Know?
Boat Owner's Cocktails are Killing our Marine
Life!
By Keith Tomlinson
Bilge Water Cocktail:
Every boat, ship and marine vessel on the water today has a Bilge Water Cocktail
in its hull. This cocktail is not suitable for consumption by man, animal or
marine life.
Bilge water can be found aboard every vessel, but its composition is always
unique. Because the bilge wells receive fluids from many parts of the boat,
bilge water can contain water, oil, dispersants, detergents, solvents,
chemicals, particles and more. This makes it a potent threat to our river, lakes
and oceans if it is pumped over board untreated.
Bilge water must be cleaned and treated before discharging back into our river,
lakes or ocean. Inefficient bilge water treatment is a financial as well as an
environmental concern. IMO requires that even older ships ensure oil content of
no more than 15 ppm, and failure to comply can result in heavy fines from
national authorities.
An oil water separator, oil polishing filter and metal polishing filter can turn
your Bilge Water Cocktail into water that is acceptable to the marine
environment and marine life.
Hull Waste Water Cocktail:
Yacht and boat owners know the effects of a biofouled hull. Instead of a smooth,
clean hull cutting through the water, marine growth creates drag and reduces
speed. Extra demand on engines to maintain speed means increased fuel use and
added cost, regardless of vessel size.
Hulls must be cleaned on a regular basis to remove algae, mussels, barnacles,
loss toxic paint bits, anti-fouling bits, oil and other contaminants that hulls
are exposed to. Add to this cleaning materials used to clean the hulls and you
have a real strong Hull Waste Water Cocktail not suitable for consumption by
man, animal or marine life.

environment and marine life.
Parking Lot Run off Cocktail:
While you are enjoying the luxury of your yacht, boat or vessel; the car, truck
or bus that you left in the parking lot if shedding tears of oil, dripping brake
fluid or allowing the rains to wash dirt, grease and solvents of its body on to
the parking lot surface. Add to this the run off of fertilizers, weed killer,
salt, insect sprays and other solutions used to beautify the landscape and that
drain in the lower area of the parking lot is a collector of the Parking Lot Run
off Cocktail. This cocktail mixture is not suitable for consumption by man,
animal or marine life.

Marina Roof and Floor Drain Cocktail:
What is flowing down the eve toughs into the storm drains when it rains? When
the floors of the kitchen and bar area are cleaned each night the waste water
most likely goes down the floor drain into the storm drain. Add to this the
dirt, salt and soil that we carry in on our shoes or boot and you have the
Marina Roof and Floor Drain Cocktail. This cocktail is not suitable for
consumption by man, animal or marine life.
Floor drain and storm drain protectors, backed up with an oil water separator,
oil polishing filter and metal polishing filter can turn your Marina Roof and
Floor Drain Cocktail into water that is acceptable to the marine environment and
marine life.
Many of our Marinas today have adopted the Green Marine policies and practices
by treating these four cocktails before they reach our streams, rivers, lakes and
oceans. Thus helping to give our marine environments the ability to stay healthy
for the pleasure and use by the generations to follow. These practices are also
helping to ensure our seafood that we eat today is healthy and sustainable.
